Rainy Days on End + Mini Dorm Tour

Updated: Jun 2, 2022

Just a general life update because not much has happened!

I'm still quite busy with schoolwork, and it's finally clicked that I'm over a month into my university experience in Taiwan! Speaking of learning... one of the things that you learn about Taiwan is that it rains.. a lot.

According to locals, wintertime is when it's the rainiest. But during springtime? It's rainy too. What about the summer? It's rainy as well, accompanied by intense humidity. As for fall? You already know the drill. I've already trained myself to not be surprised when I open up the weather app and it shows there's predicted to be rainfall for the entire upcoming week. Just make sure to bring an umbrella with you when you go out!

And what does all this rain make me feel like doing? Staying indoors all day! Coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic and the government's suggestion to minimize time spent outside, staying indoors is not a difficult choice to make for me!

Since I'm inside for majority of my day, I might as well show you around.

My space is on the right side, while my roommate's space is on the left.

I'm living in a NTU Shui-Yuan dorms Double room, meaning that I have a roommate! As you can see in the photo on the left, the dorm provides some bare necessities. A desk and chair, a bookshelf, and a bed frame. We also have an AC unit, although we haven't turned that on yet as the weather is still quite cool. Not pictured are the mini fridge and individual built-in closets.

The dorm has no WiFi, but internet is included, provided that you have an ethernet cable to plug into the wall. Water is included in the rent, but electricity isn't. We have an electricity card that we plug into a meter and we have to refill this card every so often.

The dorms have a 24-hour desk with at least one staff available at all times, in case of emergency. I once went to the desk to recharge our electricity card at 3 am so our power wouldn't go out! We also have a 7-11 vending machine in the lobby of our dorm, which is stocked with some simple foods like sandwiches, tea, and snacks.

All in all, the dorms are very affordable, and I was lucky enough to get in (due to limited capacity, the whole process is surprisingly competitive).

Thanks for reading and until the next post, see you!

Deborah
